Slab Seeker Fishing Report 8-16-18
Despite the hot temps fishing remains good in Otter Tail Lakes Country. We’ve been finding big bluegills feasting on blood worms over mud basin areas. Had several fish at and over 11″,biggest going 1lb 8oz’s, caught by customers last week. On clear lakes with deep weeds don’t be afraid to look deep as it seems as though fish are searching out that cooler water. On lakes with heavy algae blooms, where you are not seeing deep vegetation on your electronics, a thermocline might have developed so look in that 12-16 ft range. Steep dropping shoreline structure along with main lake humps and points have been best as of late. Bass have been active on outside weed edges. Try using jigs tipped with beaver style trailers, jig worms or flat sided crank baits like a rattle trap. When you hit a weed using a flat sided crank bait make sure to give
it a “pop” almost like setting the hook. This has been a huge trigger and will lead to more bites. During the heat of the day try skipping unweighted Texas Rigged Senko style baits under docks or punching jigs into matted areas of coontail where bass are finding shade. We are also coming into my favorite time of year to fish top water frogs over lilly pads. Move to cover water as bass have been schooled together. Northern pike have still surprisingly been active on deep cabbage beds, find some cooler water and you should have some success. Spinner baits and spoons are top choices as of late. You can also pitch big swim baits into cabbage patches during low light periods for some aggressive strikes. Walleyes have definitely been more cooperative during low light periods. Cabbage edges and main lake structure both producing fish depending on the lake. Spinners like a Northland Fishing Tackle Butterfly Blade Slow Death Rig fished on a bottom bouncer and tipped with a half a night crawler has been our confidence presentation as of late. Crappies have become really active lately. Look to areas with floating docks and swim rafts and pitch small jigs and plastics to the edges. Trolling the tops of cabbage has also been producing limits of Otter TailCounty slabs. Tight lines and see you around lakes country.
