Mayfly Madness
Hello anglers!
The water temps around Otter Tail County are about 67 degrees. When the water temps start touching 70 degrees, it’s the last stage of “spring” in the underwater world! Nearly all fish species have finished spawning – the last to spawn are sunfish (and even they are wrapping it up on Otter Tail County’s small lakes). Crappie are entering their summer patterns and bass are finally getting out of post spawn. Walleye fishing continues to be strong all around Otter Tail Lakes Country.
The only set back on some lakes, is the Mayfly hatch. They make great fish food. Walleye tend to suspend a couple feet off the bottom during the Mayfly hatch so they are easy to locate, but in many cases they won’t feed. If you run into fish that are easy to see on your electronics and they are not biting, just move a mile or so and try a new spot. Mayfly rarely all hatch at the same time or with the same intensity, so know that there are still walleye that are catchable somewhere on the lake—you might just have to look harder!
Northern Pike and the spawning sunfish are staying close to weeds, and they are aggressive right now. Trolling diving crack baits over weeds, near drops on the edge of flats/shallows are good bets. Good luck fishing this week in Otter Tail Lakes Country!
Please help stop the spread of AIS. Drain your boat of its water and check for weeds—lets keep Otter Tail County free of Aquatic Invasive Species! Thanks and I’ll see you on the water.
