Beating the heat
By Garett Svir of Slab Seaker Fishing
The theme this week is beating the heat and no I’m not talking about us anglers, I’m talking about the fish. Water temps are now touching 80 degrees and with very little wind this week the fishing changed a little. Not for the worse just different. While the deep outside weed edges have been holding a lot of the fish lately, this week it seems like a lot of species slid right into the weeds. The question is how to extract them.
Bass
Well as far bass a skirted swim jig with a weed guard is a great place to start. Tip this with a beaver style bait and cast it up into the weeds and work it toward the boat. This is also a great time to year to throw a plastic frog near pads as these are great shady hideouts for bass.
Crappie
As for the crappies try trolling a 1/16 or 1/32 oz jig and a twister tail or small plastic minnow like a Bobby Garland Baby Shad over the tops of the vegetation. A Beetle Spin is also a great weedless option.
Walleye
For walleyes using a worm weight instead of a bottom bouncer weight will keep you weed free and try replacing your night crawler for a Gulp Crawler as they stay on much better in heavy vegetation. In these warm temps find and fish the vegetation you’ll be successful. Tight lines. Garett Svirย http://www.slabseekerfishing.com
