Fishing Opener Advice

It’s finally here!ย We are a few days away from MN’s fishing opener and I’ve got a few tips to help you make it a success. I’m not sure why opener isn’t a holiday yet but it should be!ย There’s a ton of information on finding and catching fish on opener so let’s talk about some ways to make your opener better!ย Here is my fishing opener advice.
First off, preparation will make the weekend better.ย I see it every year where someone backs their boat in and it won’t start.ย We have open water so take your boat to the nearest lake and make sure it’s all working. If something is wrong there are plenty of places to help you out like Rays Sport and Marine in Perham.ย ย
Now we all know how busy our lakes get opening weekend so get your boat ready while you wait to launch. You won’t make many friends if you back into the ramp and then start taking your cover off.
As far as the walleyes go, the usuall will work. Jigs and minnows (if you can find them) will work but don’t forget about plastics! An 1/8oz. Jig tipped with a 3″paddle tail will work just as good as live bait. Cast and work along the bottom. Crankbaits are an overlooked option this time of year. With so many fish shallow its an easy way to cover water and locate pods of fish.
A medium or medium light spinning rod will do the trick I like the 7’6″ apex elite from Tuned Up Custom Rods and pair it up with 8lb. Line and your ready to rock! Look for sand flats in the 10ft or less range and cover water till you find some fish.
Don’t forget that fishing is meant to be enjoyed! No matter what the action is like, just enjoy the time on the water with friends!
