A season of change
By Randin Olson, Lock Jaw Guide Service
With the snow gone and the ice not far behind, it’s time to start thinking of spring fishing.
This is a great time of year to go through your summer arsenal and organize, repair, replace and add to your collection. Although some are still ice fishing please use extreme caution as the ice is losing strength by the minute.
Catching fish starts with having all your equipment in good shape. One of the biggest reasons you catch/ don’t catch fish can be your fishing line. Whether you use braid, mono, or fluorocarbon your line needs to be replaced often to keep it good and strong. One feature of braid is that you can “flip” the spool and use the line for another term.
Tackle organization plays a big part in catching fish. Having your tackle easily accessible is a must whether your on a good bite or just trying to figure out what they want. Take this time to clean out your boxes and make sure you replace any hooks that may be rusted or bent.
Rods take a lot of abuse throughout a season. This is a great time to repair or replace any beaten up rods you may have in your collection. If you happen to find rods that you don’t use or no longer want, take the initiative to give them to a kid so we can pass on the love of the outdoors to the next generation.
Again, if you are still venturing out please be VERY CAREFUL! Open water will be here soon so now is the time to get your equipment ready.
