Women’s Day Show Returns, Reception Friday
Center Hosts Gallery Opening March 16
International Women’s Day celebrates the accomplishments of women from all walks of life and in all industries. The Cultural Center in New York Mills takes advantage of this day of celebration to honor the work of women artists. This year, that praise is bestowed on five regional artists whose work is featured in the current gallery exhibition, Artist as Archivist–Artist as Activist.
This exhibit is currently open and runs through Saturday, April 7. The reception for the show is on Friday, March 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Gallery at the Center. It is free to attend and light refreshments are served. In addition to being able to meet the artists and hear them talk of their work, attendees are able to hear the flute and piano music of Amanda Hoeft, a flautist from Fargo, ND.
The artists highlighted for Women’s Day are Cheryl Bannes, a metalsmith whose 2D collage and pastel work are on display; Sandy Bot-Miller from Little Falls, whose creative use of knitting needles give texture to oil work; Renee Danz of Through A Child’s Eyes fame who assembles antiques into sculpture; Heather Humbert, an employee of Minneapolis Institute of Art whose paintings explore gender roles and childhood toys; and Naomi Schliesman, a Springboard artist who works in multiple disciplines, including temporary vegetation sculpture.
The work of these five artists is supplemented by work from local fiber artists, including a pussy hat knitted by local woman, Ann Myers, for the Women’s March in January of 2017 and evil eye gloves which Pam Robinson knitted to be sent for participants in the March For Our Lives this month.
Women show that art can work as activism or archiving human life. Find examples of both and much more in Artist as Archivist–Artists as Activist. See the show in the gallery starting at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday through Saturday. The Center closes Wednesday and Thursday at 7:00 p.m., Friday at 5:00 p.m., and Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
