Think-Off Anniversary Weekend Kicks Off Cultural Summer
Cultural Center Hosts A Weekend of Activities Surrounding Great American Think-Off
Following two days of activities, four finalists come together to debate the 25th Anniversary Great American Think-Off questions: Has the 2016 election changed our perception of truth? Nancy Krier of Olympia, WA asserts that real truth is grounded in real facts. Pamela Lewis of Queens, NY argues that truth is perceived through opportunities to access and analyze information. Kris Pauna of Prior Lake, MN says truth is an interpretation of the world seen through personal lenses. David Shapiro of Seattle, WA believes truth is an idealized notion and that belief has changed.
The debate is held at the James W. Mann Center for the Performing Arts at the New York Mills School. Doors open at6:00 p.m. and the mudslinging starts at 7:00 p.m. After the debate, the audience and community are invited to the Cultural Center for a closing reception. Finalists and the debate winner are available for conversation and food is provided gratis.
Friday evening, on June 9, the Center hosts a community dinner to welcome the debate finalists to New York Mills. Held at the Barn Shelter in the Sculpture Park, the event includes food, drink, live music, and a traveling Finnish sauna. Reservations are required for the sauna. Check kulcher.org for details. Saturday morning before the debate, the New York Mills Library, supported by the Viking Library System hosts “Bagels & Book Launch” at the Cultural Center. Elisa Korenne releases her new title, A Hundred Miles to Nowhere. Friend of the Library provide bagels and other New York City themed treats. The party is 10:00 a.m. until noon and features a book reading, talk by the author, and social time. It is free to attend.
Tickets for the debate are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, and $5 for students. They can be purchased online atcthinkoff2017.brownpapertickets.com or by calling the Center.
