Pelican Rapids Lighted Horse Parade Kicks Off the Holidays

N early everyone would agree that the holidays are the most magical time of the year. There is also something enchanting about an old-fashioned lighted horse parade. It’s been 100 years since horses were an essential part of our everyday life. It could have something to do with the tradition of the American holiday parade, the oldest of which is the Peoria, Illinois Santa Claus Parade, which has been continuously held since 1887. At the very least, our special enjoyment of holiday lighted horse parades stems from the beauty of the sensory experience itself–majestic horses whinnying, with attached bells jingling, a multitude of Christmas lights adorning the floats they pull, happy passengers waving at the spectators lining the decorated streets, and stores opening their doors late, serving warm drinks, great deals, and good cheer.
The Pelican Rapids Lighted Horse Parade takes place at 6:30 p.m. on November 27th, the Friday evening after Thanksgiving, one hour after the mayor lights up the city Christmas tree. The event is hosted by the retail shops and the Pelican Rapids Chamber of Commerce. Each horse-drawn float is sponsored by a local business, decorated in colorful lights, and driven through the downtown streets. The parade’s path goes up the main streets of Pelican and then comes back through the downtown area again so people have a chance to see the floats twice.
Many of the participants are members of the Red River Harness and Saddle Club, based in the Northwest Central region of MN and Mideastern ND. Hundreds of spectators attend the parade and many local businesses keep their shops open for the celebration, providing snacks, cookies, beer, wine, hot chocolate, Christmas displays, and many great deals for early Holiday shoppers. The Chamber of Commerce passes out ballots so people can vote for their favorite float.
The Christmas Tree lighting and the parade is the holiday kickoff for the Old Fashioned Hometown Christmas celebration. In the past, the event has included a dance show, breakfast with Santa, fashion show, silent auction, bake sale, local merchant style show, Christmas concert, and more.
Join us November 27 and help kick off the holiday season, spend some time outdoors with family and neighbors, watch the beautiful horse-drawn floats, drink some hot cider, and have some old-fashioned fun. It’s the perfect way to fire up your Christmas spirit!
