Speed up for hot summer fishing
by Randin Olson of Lock Jaw Guide Service
Fishing during these hot temps can be challenging or rewarding, it depends on how you approach your day. Speed can be the very important on the water and during the summer it can mean the difference between success and failure.
panfish
Panfish are located in our around the weeds. Trolling at 1.5 to 2mph with a 1/16th or 1/32nd oz jigs with a twister tail or paddle tail is a great way to locate fish while a slip bobber and leech or thumper jigs work great to cast at pods of fish.
bass
Bass are stacked in shade areas. Docks, boats, swim platforms, and other shade areas will hold fish but deep weedlines are holding lots of numbers. Jigs, swimbaits, and Carolina rigs have been my go to’s.
pike
Pike can be found in the weeds. Cranks, spinner baits, or a jig with a sucker minnow will produce loads of fun.
walleye
Eyeballs can be found deep and shallow. Spinners, cranks, and plastics are great ways to cover water and get active fish. Don’t be afraid to keep moving if the bite slows down. And bump that speed up!
Bring lots of sunscreen and water. The weather is hot and so is the fishing. Play with your speed on the water as this can be a major factor in how successful you are in your next outing.
