Season of Transition
As the temps warm up and the much anticipated ice off it is time to get prepared for the upcoming fishing opener.
As we start thinking about the open water season, now is the time to get all of your tackle and other equipment organized. I utilize old 35 mm film containers to keep all of my hooks, swivels, sinkers, beads and blades. One container for each style, color and size of hook with the same concept for all of the other terminal tackle. I label each of the film containers and then put all the hooks into a labeled tray style tackle box. This helps me be more efficient and organized on the water. If I need a #6 red octopus style hook I just grab the hook tackle tray and then the film container with that specific hook. This eliminates the time of searching through a mess of assorted hooks trying to find what I want. Now is also the time to replace your old line and to clean, and repair, your reels. Check the guides on your rods by running a Q-tip around the inside of the guide checking for any nicks or cracks that may have developed. If there is a nick some of the cotton from the Q-tip will snag on the nick. One a side note, to help protect your guides, never “store” your hook by putting it through the actual guide. Use the hook keeper or at least the guide support. Check your electronics and wiring using a small amount of electrical grease on your connections. Check all the lights and pumps in your boat. Check the lights on your trailer. When was the last time the trailer bearings were greased? How about the winch strap and tie down straps? Check the conditions of your life jackets and replace them if need be. Check the condition of the batteries in your boat. All of these things are going to eliminate potential headaches down the road and are going to make you more efficient with your treasured fishing time.
Don’t forget to pick up your fishing licenses at Fleet Farm, Lakeland General Store, Gene’s Sport Shop or Ben’s Bait Shop.
