Fishing Report 3-23-22
By Dan Amundson, Sporting Journal Radio
Well it’s official. Spring is here which brings the awkward transition from ice to open water. Some folks have already pulled their boats out and hit the road to find open water, while others are still getting out and drilling holes on hardwater.
Safety has to be the number one thing on your mind this time of year. If you’re still trying to venture on the ice, watch the weather, use a spud bar and don’t risk anything. A few panfish aren’t worth it. If you’re hopping in your boat, wear your PFD. Water temps are very cold, and your body doesn’t react well if you go in the drink. The life jacket will save your life.
Fishing has been very good for anglers who are still out there. Panfish remains the main focus. Bluegills, Crappies and Perch have been putting on the feedbag as they get ready for the warmer water temps. Tungsten jigs with plastics or waxies continue to be the ticket, just like they have been all year.
Tullibees remain a fun option for those looking for something different. They fight hard and taste great when smoked. Flashy spoons with dropper rigs is standard for these fish. Deeper water adjacent to shallow flats is a great place to start.
Most bodies of water aren’t accessible by boat yet, but it’s coming. Stretches of the local rivers are open and can be explored for those who are sick of the ice and want to stay close to the region. Keep an eye out for the suckers to start to run. When they do, they’re a blast to target on a warm spring day on a river bank.
Get out and enjoy the warmer weather, and remember to stay safe. You don’t want to be making headlines because of a water rescue.
