I don’t want to jinx it, but I think we made it through winter! We’re finally starting to see warmer weather in the forecast and that means it’s time to pack light and chase fish! March can be the best time of year to chase panfish they tend to school up and are fairly easy to find.
As the weather warms we will stay to see a big push of fish moving shallow. The much needed melt will boost the oxygen levels in the lake and the fish will respond.
Fish will start making their way shallow from the depths. This time of year in focusing on weeds, they may or may not be green but the big focus is standing weeds. One of my favorite ways to locate fish in weeds is to use an underwater camera. My personal choice is the Marcum pursuit HD. I like to drill and look until I find fish. More often then not they won’t move far from day to day. This is a great time to stay aggressive. Rattle baits and plastics are my go to.
Don’t forget about the silver daters! Tullibee are a great table fair and an awesome fight! Dropper rigs are my favorite but many tactics will work. Focus on deep holes and cover the entire water column.
It’s not time to put the ice gear away yet pack light and go get ’em!
