Throughout 2023, the Kaddatz Galleries has been dedicated to celebrating the visual legacy of
Charles Beck, the renowned painter and masterful woodcut printmaker from Fergus Falls. Our
year-long celebration has encompassed a diverse array of exhibitions, immersive printmaking
workshops, and memorable special events. In this final installment of our Year of Beck tribute, C.
Beck: Rarities & Masterworks, we present a curated selection of unique and masterful works
spanning Charles Beck’s illustrious career.
This exhibition is a treasure trove of seldom-seen prints, showcasing the very last print ever
completed by Charles Beck. Notable highlights include a one-of-a-kind painted Cathedral Forest
woodcut block, paintings that vividly convey his artistic exploration, a rare screenprint, a
captivating etching from his artistic sojourn in Mexico, and a host of other remarkable pieces. Every
item featured in the exhibition has been thoughtfully sourced from the Beck family collection,
unless otherwise noted.
Having recently concluded a 35-year career, Mr. Brian Szott’s journey culminated with a
remarkable 20-year tenure as the Curator of Art at the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul.
Prior to this, he held the esteemed position of Director at MCAD Gallery at the Minneapolis College
of Art and Design for nearly a decade.
With a specialty in the history of art making in Minnesota, Szott has organized numerous
exhibitions such as Seth Eastman: Artist on the Frontier, Charles Beck: An Artist for All
Seasons, Clouds and Shadows and, in 2022, Art Speaks.
Szott is also a co-author of the 2015 publication Minnesota Modern: Four Artists of the 20th
Century. He received his graduate degree in Museum Studies from the University of
Minnesota.
We are delighted to announce that C. Beck: Rarities & Masterworks will be on display in Studio K
from October 12 to December 23, 2023. For a comprehensive listing of all Year of Beck exhibitions
