Kaddatz Galleries hosts La Valleur photos from Cuba
FERGUS FALLS, MN – Beginning Thurs., April 6, the Kaddatz Galleries will host “Hola, Cuba!”, photojournalist Barbara La Valleur’s exhibit of photos from a recent Cuba trip. The exhibit will run through Sat., May 13, with an artist’s reception set for Sat., April 8, 3-5 p.m.
La Valleur has culled 5,000 images she shot in Cuba down to about 50. The country’s raw beauty and current struggles are represented by photos of crumbling buildings, old cars, feral and unexpected animals, the aquamarine waters of the Caribbean and the delightful work of artist Salvador Gonzalez Escalona.
La Valleur, a native of Ashby and a Battle Lake High School graduate, spent over 50 years as a photojournalist on two continents, including the U.S.Virgin Islands, Wahpeton-Breckenridge and Europe. She continues to freelance. An Edina resident, she is one of the La Valleur sisters who own La Farm near Ashby.
La Valleur will also lead two salons at the Kaddatz. The first, on Sat., April 22, 2-4 p.m. is “How I Went From Being a 15-Year-Old Owner of a 1937 Chevy in Battle Lake, MN to Being an Award Winning Photojournalist in Bensheim, Germany.”
This salon would appeal to students of all ages interested in photography and art or communications careers, as well as mid-career people looking to expand income options, and anyone who appreciates great photography.
The second salon, on Sat. May 6, 2-4 p.m., “My 55-Year Journey as an International Photojournalist,” will offer constructive criticism to photographers of all ages and abilities. Each attendee is encouraged to bring one favorite photo for La Valleur’s critique.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Lake Region Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage fund.
The Kaddatz Galleries’ mission is to foster visual arts education and appreciation, and to maintain a gallery that celebrates the work of area artists and honors the legacy of Charles Beck.
