ice fishing report 12-15-21

Burning ice!
We’re back at it here in Otter Tail County, MN. Frigid temps are in the forecast which should mean the ice will be getting thicker and the fishing should stay hot! As always with the ice, use caution. We’re still in early ice and the thickness can vary greatly. We’re seeing anywhere from 3 to 8 inches of ice on local lakes. You should always check your way to your spot. Cold weather is on the way but ice is never 100% safe. Use a spud bar and/ or auger and check often.

walleye
The eyeballs are snapping! The first break and points have been best. Depth ranges from 10 to 27ft. Baits haven’t mattered much but we have been running lipless cranks and spoons. Tip-ups with a rainbow minnow and a plain hook have also been very effective.

panfish
Panfish are in the weeds and can be easily caught in the weeds but you might need to search to find them. Tungsten jigs and plastics have been best. If the plastics aren’t working, don’t be afraid to tip your lure with a couple wax worms. We have seen crappies cruising deeper water (20 feet) just under the ice.

Fishing is great right now and there’s allot of untouched water to be fished. Please, please use caution when venturing out and never go alone!
