Hunting & Fishing in Otter Tail Lakes Country
By Ross Hagemeister, miesterguideservice.com
It’s mid-November and we have reached the annual in-between-seasons season. Minnesota’s deer hunting season is in full-swing, ducks and geese are migrating through the county making for good water-fowling, and the crops are out and there are lots of pheasants to chase. Fishing in Lakes Country has taken it’s brief seasonal “back seat” to all things hunting—myself included. The hunting in Otter Tail County is actually so promising and productive, that it’s hard to focus on work and chores because the woods and prairie call. I spin in circles everyday wondering where I should place my time. It’s a gamble you know. You don’t want to be in the deer stand when the diver ducks are ganging up on the lake next door, and you don’t want to be hunting pheasants during deer hunting because you’re sure to see the buck of your life when you’ve got bird shot in your gun! It’s a real pickle. In truth, for those of us who hunt Otter Tail Lakes Country, we’re spoiled!

It’s time to winterize the boat, get out (with or without a gun in hand) and enjoy a walk across the prairie or a stalk through the pines in the northern part of the county, after all, winter is beckoning. It’s only going to be a matter of a few short weeks when ice fishing will be in full swing again! Enjoy the dry brown earth before it disappears for another 5 months; and if hunting and hiking aren’t your thing, it’s not too early to start gearing up for ice fishing.
On that note, if you haven’t started gearing up for ice fishing, it might be something to do sooner than later. The Corona Virus ordeal has sent the industry sideways since March. There has been a high-demand and low supply of fishing goods and services across the states as folks have rekindled an interest in fishing. It’s an accessible pass time that folks are exploring since many other “normal” things to do have been shut down or have become un-popular. Fishing interest is at an all time high—it might be a good idea to get your stuff in order early this season. Enjoy your time in the outdoors this week and I’ll see you back on the lakes in a few weeks!
