Weather Report
February weather gave us some good winter! We plummeted into another deep freeze which gave us all the feels except warmth. Just when it started to feel nice and sunny, we became a tundra with wind and below zero temps. While we finally have enough snow for great outdoor activities (like snowmobiling) we are still far from being buried. It did get cold enough for us to have fun with science. Did you see our post?
The Great Boiling Water Ice Experiment Watch us turn hot water into steam!
Experiment:
- Fill a cup with boiling water
- Throw the hot water into the cold air (avoid throwing directly over yourself)
- The hot water will split into tiny droplets.
- The droplets will evaporate and condense into a cloud.
Explanation:
The molecules in hot water move faster than those in cold water, so hot water evaporates faster. The cold air can’t hold as much water vapor (hence why we are so dry up here right now!), so the steam condenses back into liquid water droplets. The water droplets have a large surface area compared to their size, which allows for a lot of evaporation. This all makes the water change quickly from a liquid to a gas.
This is only recommended if it is -14*F or lower! Technically it was -12*F when we did this, but the real feel was -28*F, so it worked! No Caitlins were harmed in the making of this video.

Summer is coming!
