2nd Annual Weaving Waters Fiber Arts Trail Weekend in NYM Sept 20-22

The Cultural Center invites all to New York Mills for the 2nd annual Weaving Waters Fiber Arts Trail weekend activities September 20-22, 2018.
This year’s festivities include two fiber arts workshops on Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday, a quilt documentation day, gallery reception, and Bill & Kate Isles concert to wrap up the weekend.
The first workshop opportunity is “Knifty Knit a Child’s Hat” on Thursday, September 20 at noon-2pm. This workshop is led by Sit & Stitcher Shelley Johnson, who has been knifty knitting for over a decade. This is a beginner’s level course and is just $10/person. Pre-registration is requested as there is only room for 4; call 218-385-3339.
On Friday, September 21 at noon-3pm, master weaver Bruce Engebretson will lead a Backstrap Loom Weaving workshop for up to 8 students. This is a special opportunity to create your own loom and learn to weave in this traditional method, for just $10/person. Don’t miss this chance – call today to hold your spot!
A special partnership with the Minnesota Quilt Project offers the opportunity for local quilt-makers to be included in a quilt documentation project. Participation in this Quilt Documentation Day is free, by appointment. Each appointment will take 20-30 min. The Gallery will also feature fiber arts with the exhibit “Ripping the Seams: Unique & Activist Fiber Arts” which showcases the work of Jacob Allers-Hatlie, Liza Gorman-Baer, Ian Hanesworth, Vatina McLaurin, Liv Tran, and Audra Troutvetter. Also on display in partnership with Minnesota Quilters, Inc. will be an antique quilt by Lavina Fedderly (1856-1943) and its reproduction by the MN Quilt Project. A gallery reception and artist talk will be held on Saturday, September 22 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. This is free to attend and open to all. Light refreshments and cash bar available.
This full & fun art weekend concludes with an acoustic folk concert by Bill & Kate Isles, singer/songwriter duo from Duluth, on Saturday, September 22 at 7:30 p.m. Bill & Kate are consummate performers, best known for their catchy melodies, memorable songs, and deep-seated love for the audience and each other, which shines before, during, and after the performance. They tour nationally and use a wide variety of musical styles to carry audiences through a broad landscape of experiences from metaphorical worlds to small town family stories and to zany comedy. New York Mills is once again the ‘top of the trail,’ which stretches from Brainerd, south to Little Falls and Randall, and back up to Staples, Deer Creek, and Wadena, before peaking north in NYM.
