Empowering Kids to Bright Futures

Everyone would agree that all children deserve a life of hope, happiness, dignity, and purpose. Individuals with autism or other special needs often experience roadblocks to those most basic expectations of life. Without help, these children are often shackled at a time when they should be developing the critical skills and tools needed to be successful and independent in life.
In 2016, after many years of searching for additional services for their grandson with autism, Kim and Kenny Nelson’s dream to start an autism program in Perham became a reality. As one of the only non-profit autism organizations located between Moorhead and Minneapolis, Empowering Kids is designed specifically for individuals with autism or social challenges such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Cost is not a barrier for families and caregivers who are seeking support, as reduced rates and scholarships are available.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is currently diagnosed according to deficits which fit into three broad areas: social interaction, communication, and patterns of restrictive, repetitive behaviors and interests. As autism is a spectrum disorder, each individual with the diagnosis has a very unique set of strengths, weaknesses, interests and abilities.
The professional staff at Empowering Kids uses evidence- based practices and research-based curriculum to deliver their high quality and affordable programming. Their Special Education degrees and professional experience working with individuals that have autism help them understand the specific skills that need to be taught and reinforced.
The services that the organization offers include early intervention, individual social skills sessions, after school programming, parent support and community awareness as well as community training. In personal services and during the after school program, students learn social, communication and self-regulation strategies. They learn about and develop skills in the areas of empathy, emotion management, friendships and problem solving.
The services offered by Empowering Kids are important for children and families of children who have been diagnosed with autism or other social challenges. Empowering Kids’ services and supports are important for learning expected behaviors and language the child can use to achieve their desired outcome now and in the future. Empowering Kids is a special learning atmosphere with services, resources, and care that individuals need to improve their skills, gain friendships and feel accepted and supported in every stage of life.
