The Summer Pattern of Finding Walleye is Upon Us
July 9, 2015
The summer pattern of finding and catching walleye is upon us. We have lake fly hatches going on and lots of young bait fish that we will be competing with each and every time out on the water. Start you search in shallow water in about 10 to 15 feet, depending upon where the main weed line is set up on a particular piece of structure, using a 3 to 5 foot snell while using a leech or crawler. For a hook, try using either a plain live bait hook or a floater. A floater works really well if you have a mossy bottom that you are dealing with. If you are not locating any walleye on the shallow shoreline breaks, move out a little deeper and check the 15 to 25 foot range. Look for mid lake humps and bumps that are surrounded by deeper water. For some Northern Pike action, look in 10 to 15 foot weed lines while using minnows or spoons. Crappies, bass, and sunfish have all been active in the weeds. Look for crappies to be suspended in the weeds in 8 to 15 feet, and bass in 8 to 14 feet. Anglers have had the most success while using crappie minnows for crappies, and jigs and minnows or spinnerbaits for bass. For some exciting sunfish fishing, look in 5 to 8 foot depths while using worms or waxworms.
