The spring of 2011 I accompanied my mentor and friend to North Branch, Ontario to see and experience the world of fur. Kay was planning on competing in the beaver skinning contest (she has many trophies for the fastest beaver skinning). I was hoping to learn everything I could about fur and meet some of Kay’s contacts. We drove the 18+ hours and finally arrived at the fur auction house. I was completely in awe of the amount of fur and the types of fur! It was all amazing. The next day we went back to the auction house for the competition and the trade show. Little did I know that Kay registered me in the timed beaver skinning contest. At this point I had not even seen someone skin anything other than a deer. I watched Kay “clean skin” one beaver. Then it was my turn! Kay stood outside the roped off area and coached me through the whole process. To make a long story short Kay took 1st and I took 2nd. It was shortly after the return from this trip that I purchased my first Bonis brothers fur machine from a retired furrier in Winnipeg. Now I enjoy creating slippers, mittens, hats, boot toppers, and headbands in all sizes. I am always open to trying something new, so please don’t hesitate it ask!
