Native Indie Folk Blues Rocker Returns to NYM Cultural Center
Native Indie Folk Blues Rocker Returns
Cultural Center Hosts Corey Medina & Brothers in Concert
Corey Medina’s first performance in New York Mills back in October of 2016 was one of the Cultural Center’s most well-attended shows in its twenty-plus-year history. On Friday, March 2, he returns with his band, Brothers, to reprise that original eventful evening. Corey Medina & Brothers are sure to bring down the house in soulful Navajo fashion! His unique blend of blues, rock, indie, soul, and folk commences at 7:30 p.m.
Medina was born and raised in the small town of Shiprock, New Mexico, on the Navajo Reservation. In 2012 he relocated to another small town, Bemidji, Minnesota. His early musical influences came out of what his mom and uncles listened to: blues, classic country, soul, classic rock and metal. Growing up with a single mom and a rebellious heart, Medina quickly learned what the “blues” are and what it means to create that music. He now resides in Minneapolis.
“I’ve been into music, just in general growing up with my parents–well my mom and my uncle–but I finally started playing guitar around 12 or 13,” says Medina, “By the time I got to high school, I joined a band. So yeah, I started playing all around the reservation.”
Even though Medina loves to just write and play music, his mission is to spread a message of hope and encouragement to every tribe and tongue that has felt hopeless and held back in life by fear, shame and hurt.
Says Cultural Center Executive Director, Betsy Roder, “Not only is this concert a chance for people to hear fantastic music, but it’s also an opportunity to share in Corey’s uplifting story and to feel some of the light he tries to bring to every encounter.”
Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Center members receive a two-dollar discount on tickets and as always, students get in for just five dollars!
