Moorhead Horizon West Middle School Visits the Prospect House Museum
The Prospect House & Civil War Museum was delighted to host Ms. Osland’s 6th grade class from Moorhead Horizon West Middle School on Tuesday, May 8th. The students participated in The Civil War & Minnesota education program which covers the Minnesota State Social Studies Standards for 6th grade regarding the Civil War and Reconstruction 1850-1877. This delightful group of students enjoyed hearing and role playing the stories of Civil War Soldiers, Northern and Southern Civilians, Native Americans and Early Minnesota Settlers.
When asked what were the highlights of their visit to the museum, students stated:
“My favorite part was learning about how soldiers lived during the war, and we got to lie
in a soldier’s dog tent.”
“I liked that we got to see so many artifacts and were able to touch many of them!”
“I thought the Civil War money and guns were cool.”
Following their visit to the museum, the class enjoyed lunch in the shadow of Chief Wenonga near the shores of Battle Lake before heading back to school in Moorhead.
“What a wonderful learning experience for the students!” Ms. Osland stated. She looks forward to returning to the museum with a new group of 6th graders next school year.
The creation of this accredited education program and interpretive tour, The Civil War & Minnesota, was made possible by a grant from the Minnesota Historical Society and runs September through May.
