DESCRIPTION:The Lake Region Run has been the lakes area premier half-marathon\, 5k and 1-mile event since 2007. To celebrate 10-years of Cancer Care in Fergus Falls we replaced the half-marathon and half-marathon relay with a 10-mile and 10-mile relay in 2020\, and decided to keep the 10 mile distance going forward. \nThe beautiful scenery of the Fergus Falls area\, the variety of race lengths and the temperate conditions in early June make the race a perfect fit for the casual runner or walker to the serious competitor who wants to tackle the challenging hills of Fergus Falls. \nEveryone can feel the camaraderie and community as they participate in the cause of raising money for the Lake Region Healthcare Cancer Care Center while doing something good for their health. \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Cove Connections session featuring local occupational therapist Dr. Kaci Walvatne as we explore how play can help children process\, prepare for\, and feel more confident during medical and dental experiences. \nAs part of her doctoral program\, Dr. Walvatne partnered with Otter Cove to create a special Change It Up exhibit centered around medical play. Through surveys and conversations with parents and caregivers\, she discovered a common challenge for families: anxiety\, fear\, and uncertainty surrounding doctor visits\, hospital stays\, dental appointments\, medical equipment\, and procedures. \nThe resulting exhibit invited children to explore these experiences through hands-on\, child-led play\, offering opportunities to interact with pretend medical tools\, practice caregiving roles\, become familiar with equipment and environments\, and build confidence through curiosity and imagination. \nIn this Cove Connections session\, families and caregivers will learn: \n\nWhy medical play helps reduce fear and anxiety\nHow children process unfamiliar or stressful experiences through play\nSimple ways to support children before appointments or procedures\nHow play can strengthen trust\, communication\, and emotional regulation during difficult experiences\n\nWhether your child feels nervous about the dentist\, has ongoing medical needs\, or simply benefits from preparation and predictability\, this session will offer practical tools and compassionate insight for supporting both children and caregivers. \nAs a reminder\, Cove Connections are structured like this: \n11:00-11:10 – Family project or activity \n11:10-11:30 – Children go play with an Otter Cove Playworker while a local professional provides child development and/or parenting information \n11:30-12:00 – Adults have an opportunity to connect and discuss issues or concerns \n12:00 – Families are reunited to spend Saturday together! \nCove Connections is FREE thanks to support of a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education. \nWe do require registrations to ensure we have enough project supplies\, seating\, and childcare support: Register here

SUMMARY:Perham Turtle Races
DESCRIPTION:Fun-filled family event every Wednesday in June-July-August! \nRegistration starts at 10am – races start at 10:30am Perham\, the home of International Turtle Races since 1979\, has an exciting carnival atmosphere\, with face painting\, snacks\, trolley rides\, and a variety of vendors! \nJoin us for a chance to be a race champion! Champions will take home a bag full of goodies from local businesses\, commemorative ribbon and bragging rights! \nPainted Turtles are collected from area ponds\, rivers and other bodies of water and are marked based on the location they came from to ensure they return to their home at the end of the summer. \nDuring each summer\, turtles are cared for by trained and knowledgeable volunteers. Their summer home is large and imitates their natural habitat. With shaded pools for swimming\, rocks and logs for basking in the sun and live minnows to hunt as well as other veterinarian approved turtle food. \nDue to concerns for fairness of races and safety of our racers and the other turtles\, only Painted Turtle species will be allowed to race. We will have turtles available at each race\, but racers are welcome to bring their own\, as long as they are Painted Turtles.

DESCRIPTION:Join Park Naturalist Dora on a stroll through the prairie. We will be walking a half mile loop that is a mowed grass trail. This trail does contain an uphill and downhill portion. This will be a slower paced walk to see what is blooming and growing in this patch of remanent prairie. \nWe will meet at the Prairie Hill Parking Lot. Dress for the weather that day. Ticks are out and about; bug spray is recommended along with long socks or tick gaiters. Sunscreen and water are encouraged. Feel free to bring binoculars too!
