The Otter Tail County Historical Society is hosting a special evening of old-time fiddle music on Thursday, October 17, 7 p.m.
Dennis Bauman is an 86 year old musician from Erhard, Minnesota. When he was eleven years old, following in the footsteps of his father, Dennis wanted to pick up the fiddle. His father was a fiddler who played at house parties or the Friberg Town Hall, where local would gather and dance.
Yet, when young Dennis asked his father about teaching him a few tunes, his dad discouraged him from learning music. It was a different era, times were hard and there was no money in playing music.
As Dennis got older the desire to play the fiddle would not go away. With more time on his hands he dedicated himself to the task. Today he plays at churches, nursing homes and senior centers. He plays old-time tunes his father played as well as bluegrass and gospel. Dennis Bauman is a living embodiment of our area’s musical history.
