Cultural Center Hosts Jazz-Fusion Trio
The Cultural Center jazzes up their spring concert series with a performance by a trio from Minneapolis: The New Standards can be found syncopating their rhythms and clashing chords on Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cultural Center in New York Mills.
The New Standards is a minimalist jazz trio formed in Minneapolis in 2005 and composed of Chan Poling (of The Suburbs), John Munson (Semisonic, Trip Shakespeare, and The Flops) and Steve Roehm (Rhombus, Electropolis, and Billy Goat). With Poling on piano, Munson on bass, and Roehm on vibraphone, the band reinterprets songs from a wide variety of genres, from classics like Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘My Favorite Things’ to ‘London Calling’ by The Clash.
All three are fans of great songwriting. Sensing a lack of an interesting jazz trio repertoire beyond the usual “old standards”, they got together originally to play and sing their favorite songs–from every era, particularly post 1960’s pop music–in a stripped-down acoustic setting, making room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz, and yet never fully abandoning the modest soul of pop and rock.
Says NPR, “The New Standards are making waves!”
They arrive in New York Mills on the heels of a show in Brainerd and are off to Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis in the coming months. The New Standards frequent venues like City Winery in New York City and the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. Don’t miss this chance to see them in the intimate venue of the Cultural Center in New York Mills!
Snacks are served and a cash bar is available at the show. Tickets are $15 at the door, $12 in advance (members get a $2 discount), and students get in for just $5.
